Eleventh of the twelve · Loyal, fair, watchful over others
Sign years begin at Lunar New Year — late January or February — not January 1. Born in those weeks? You may belong to the year before; enter your birthday and the reading engine sorts it exactly.
In the Great Race, the Dog — one of the strongest swimmers of the twelve — placed only eleventh, because it stopped to play in the river. It could have ranked higher; it had a better afternoon instead. There are worse philosophies.
The Dog is the cycle's conscience. Dog people are loyal before they are anything else, with a live nerve for fairness — they can feel an injustice through a wall. They guard what they love without being asked and keep faith long after the crowd has moved on. Trust, once given, is given whole.
The shadow is the worry that comes with the watch: anxiety, pessimism, the sense that letting down the guard even once is how everything is lost. At its best, the Dog remembers what the river taught — that joy is not a dereliction of duty, and the guardian is allowed in the water too.
Each return of the Dog arrives under a different element, on a sixty-year wheel — so a Metal Dog and a Fire Dog share a nature but not a temperament.
Metal Dog (1970) — edge and resolve — the Dog with the firmest will and the cleanest lines.
Water Dog (1982) — feel and flow — the most intuitive Dog, reading currents others miss.
Wood Dog (1994) — growth and plans that branch — a Dog turned toward building and beginnings.
Fire Dog (2006) — heat and visibility — the Dog at its boldest, quick to act and hard to miss.
Earth Dog (2018) — ground and patience — the steadiest Dog, practical and built to last.
Metal Dog (2030) — edge and resolve — the Dog with the firmest will and the cleanest lines.
Tradition groups the twelve into four trines of like minds. The Dog runs with the Tiger and the Horse — the open-hearted movers — freedom-loving, loyal, best in motion. Opposite it on the wheel stands the Dragon: not an enemy, but a mirror — the friction that teaches what ease cannot. And its quiet ally, the so-called secret friend, is the Rabbit, the bond that asks no performance.
The Horse is your ally, and loyalty has likely been asked of you this year. The second half asks you to spend some of that loyalty on yourself.
The turn: keep some of your care for you.
