Second of the twelve · Steady, patient, unhurried
Sign years begin at Lunar New Year — late January or February — not January 1. Born in those weeks? You may belong to the year before; enter your birthday and the reading engine sorts it exactly.
In the Great Race, the Ox carried the Rat across the river and took second place without complaint. The story tells you most of what you need to know: strength that serves, and a spine that doesn't bend to grievance.
The Ox is the cycle's foundation stone. Ox people build slowly and finish what they start; they keep their word long after keeping it stopped being convenient. There is little flash here and no appetite for shortcuts — only the deep, unglamorous power of someone who simply does not stop walking.
The cost of that steadiness is stiffness. The Ox can mistake stubbornness for principle and routine for safety, and it forgives slowly when it forgives at all. At its best it is the person everyone quietly depends on — the one whose yes means yes, whose work outlasts the weather.
Each return of the Ox arrives under a different element, on a sixty-year wheel — so a Metal Ox and a Fire Ox share a nature but not a temperament.
Metal Ox (1961) — edge and resolve — the Ox with the firmest will and the cleanest lines.
Water Ox (1973) — feel and flow — the most intuitive Ox, reading currents others miss.
Wood Ox (1985) — growth and plans that branch — a Ox turned toward building and beginnings.
Fire Ox (1997) — heat and visibility — the Ox at its boldest, quick to act and hard to miss.
Earth Ox (2009) — ground and patience — the steadiest Ox, practical and built to last.
Metal Ox (2021) — edge and resolve — the Ox with the firmest will and the cleanest lines.
Tradition groups the twelve into four trines of like minds. The Ox runs with the Snake and the Rooster — the careful builders — patient, exact, allergic to waste. Opposite it on the wheel stands the Goat: not an enemy, but a mirror — the friction that teaches what ease cannot. And its quiet ally, the so-called secret friend, is the Rat, the bond that asks no performance.
Steady as you are, the Fire Horse year has asked you to move before you felt ready. The second half lets you slow to a pace you can hold.
The turn: finish patiently what you began under pressure.
